Reiki (pronounced ray-key) means “universal life-force.” It is the Japanese word for the energy that is in all living things and all around us. Reiki therapy is a powerful, but gentle, form of energy medicine. It is a hands-on, spiritually-guided healing art believed to have originated many thousands of years ago and rediscovered in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 1800s following his study of ancient Tibetan texts.
This therapy energetically aids the body in balancing its vital energy, removing energetic blocks, detoxifying systems and encouraging renewed vitality. Through this energetic balancing, it promotes an increase in the body’s ability to heal itself by helping to create an environment where the body’s innate healing wisdom is supported in a deeply relaxed state. Just as our body is able to heal better and rejuvenate while we are sleeping.

Is Reiki treatment for you?
This treatment is for any one of any age and there are no contraindications to receiving the therapy. It is compatible with western medicine and all other alternative holistic therapies. Reiki treatment is a comprehensive healing system that works to bring the body into balance on all levels–physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is a tool for stress reduction, pain relief and to encourage relaxation and overall wellbeing. Reiki also is helpful for healthy individuals seeking to maintain balance, health and well-being. It is also highly recommended and suitable for our beloved companion animals.
How people are using this treatment?
Reiki therapy supports and encourages the body’s ability to heal itself from illness and injury. It works well with traditional medicine & can even enhance its efficacy. Reiki treatment is now regularly offered in many hospitals and hospices. Clients often report treatment is followed by a reduction in pain, stress or anxiety and deeper, more restful sleep. With ongoing treatment, individuals often report feeling better, more “centered” and better able to cope with the daily stress in their lives.
Preliminary research data suggest that regular reiki treatment can help improve:
- Heart rate and blood pressure
- Immunity
- Pain relief
- Anxiety and depression
- Perceived stress levels
Many use regular reiki therapy to:

- Shorten hospital stays and require less anesthesia
- Treat PTSD
- Support pregnancy and overcome infertility issues
- Process grief and support transition
- Release outdated emotional patterns
- Support increased overall well-being
- Access inner wisdom and creativity
- Increase spiritual awareness
What should I expect during my treatment session?
During a reiki session, the client is seated or relaxes on a massage table, fully-clothed, except for shoes. Comfortable clothing is suggested for treatment sessions. The practitioner channels energy to the client through a gentle, light touch in a series of hand placements along the body. Sessions also can be performed non-touch with hands about an inch or so from the body. Clients may feel a sense of warmth or tingling in the area being treated even during non-touch sessions, but there is no massaging or manipulation of muscles.
Each hand position is held still for three to five minutes or slightly longer as needed to encourage healing and promote wellness by balancing of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the client. This effect can create a deep sense of relaxation during a session and feelings of peace, calm and generally increased well-being after treatment. Approximately five minutes at the beginning and end of each session is for check-in and debrief (and slightly longer for a new client’s first session).
Because most experience such profound relaxation during treatment, we suggest when scheduling your appointment, please plan to allow a few extra minutes after your session to enjoy some tea and become fully alert before resuming regular activities.
Are follow-up treatments recommended?
Highly. Benefits from reiki treatment tend to be cumulative so a weekly one hour session for at least three weeks is highly recommended when beginning treatment. A series of treatments allows us to gauge how your body-mind-spirit respond. It also is reasonable to expect that additional treatments may be necessary to achieve longer lasting results. This is just as we don’t achieve physical fitness after one trip to the gym.
You and your practitioner will work together to determine need and frequency of ongoing treatments based on your goals and your response to treatment.
